January & February 2006:
“We are servants of the law in order to be free.” –Cicero
It is fitting that the first lawyer of note in history said what is about as close to a motto as I have for why I am a lawyer. It carries a paradox, of course, because of the idea that service leads to freedom, but this is true with the law–-as it is with service to the Lord.
2007:
“All knowing involves the possibility of being wrong.”–Unknown
This quote is a call to intellectual humility. By definition, if we dare to explore the annals of knowledge and risk holding onto ideas, we must account for the possibility that what we “know” is false. Keeping this in mind keeps us teachable. It is not a prescription for perpetual doubt because that assumes there is no such thing as true knowledge. However, we could accomplish nothing if no knowledge was true. Rather, this admonition counsels us to maintain vigilance in learning and acceptance of the truth that we are not God.
